Sand blasting is an industrial process developped for smoothing, shaping or cleaning hard surfaces by forcing solid particles across that surface at high speed. In sand blasting, sand is propelled by compressed air to get effects similar to that of using sandpaper. Sand blasting however gives a better result than the use of sandpaper because no problem is encountered when corners and crannies have to be blasted.
When sand blasting was developped, it consisted mainly of propelling sand that had been sieved to a uniform size on a hard surface. Other materials are now used in sand blasting such as dry ice, powdered abrasives and even ground coconut shells.
