Abrasives
Materials for grinding, polishing, blasting, either in loose form or bonded to form wheels, bricks, or files, or applied to paper and cloth by glue or resin. Natural abrasives include emery, corundum, garnet, sand, flint, etc. Metallic shot and grit are also used as abrasives in surface preparation and cleaning of castings.

Blast-cleaning Barrel
A complete enclosure which rotates on an axis, or which has an internal moving tread to tumble the parts, in order to expose various surfaces of the parts to the action of an automatic blast spray.

A complete enclosure in which blasting operations are performed and where the operator works inside the room to operate the blasting nozzle and direct the flow of the abrasive material.

An abrasive essentially composed of silicon carbide.
Chilled Shot
Cast iron shot produced by dropping molten metal through space into a water bath ; erroneously referred to as steel shot.
Corundum
Native alumna, or aluminum oxide, Al2O3, occurring as rhombohedral crystals and also in masses and variously colored grains. Applied specifically to nontransparent kinds used as abrasives. It is hardest mineral except the diamond. Corundum and its artificial counterparts are abrasives especially suited to the grinding of metals.
Cyclone (Centrifugal Collector)
In air pollution control, a controlled descending vortex created to spiral objectionable gases and dust to the bottom of a collector core.
Cyclonic Scrubber
In air pollution control, radial liquid (usually water) sprays introduced into cyclones to facilitate collection of particles.
Descale
Remove the mill scale from the surface of steel or the fire scale from the surface of casting.

Abrasion involving gross surface indentation and possible removal of sizable metal fragments.

The percentage by weight, or by number, of each fraction into which a powder sample has been classified with respect to sieve number or microns.
Peen Hardening
The increase in hardness of a metal surface due to cold working by shot blasting or peening with a hammer or by other means.

Predominantly oxidic corrosion products occurring on metal surfaces at high temperature.

Blast shot derived from casting molten metal in a water tank. The ball-shaped grains are then graded by sieving.
